The news media is never happy till they have people running in fear. Instead of reporting intelligently, reporting all the facts, they go for the sensationalism and twist and turn it into something frightening. Case in point, I give you the testing of the LHC in Geneva, Switzerland.
First off, LHC stands for Large Hadron Collider. It is the world's largest energy particle accelerator. It is housed in a tunnel 330 feet below the French-Swiss border, under the CERN research center.
CERN (Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire), European Organization for Nuclear Research, is made up of 20 (member) states, which includes 7931 scientists and engineers, and of which represent 500 universities. Their main function is to design and provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high energy physics research.
The purpose of the LHC is to explore the validity and limitations of the current theoretical picture for particle physics, the Standard Model. Using the LHC, members of CERN hope to find answers to the fundamental questions of particle mass….why do some particles have it while others don’t? They hope to recreate the big bang (the explosion that created the universe). They hope to find signs of the unseen dark matter that makes up much of the universe. And they hope to find the answers to the hidden dimensions of space and time. The collider could also hopefully find evidence of Higgs boson, a hypothetical particle for which all other particles that have mass, exists……the reason why we and everything around us exists.
CERN hopes to collide opposing beams of protons charged with approximately 7 TeVs of energy. One TeV is approximately the energy-of-motion of a flying mosquito. So when you multiply that by seven, you have one very energized proton. Anyway, when the LHC is at full power, the two beams of protons will race (at close to the speed of light) around a huge ring 11,000 times a second. So far they have tested a beam moving in one direction with great results. Next they will test it in the oppiset direction. If the path is clear they will send out 2 beams traveling simultaneously in oppiset directions and let them collide. This will hopefully create the miniature scale “Big Bang".
It is this collision that has people frightened. They have been led to believe that doing so will create micro black holes, which in turn will swallow up the earth. It is unrealistic to assume this because that which is happening is contained in an airtight vacuum and predicted to produce nothing more than that which already exists / occurs naturally without any hazardous effects. Besides, even if the LHC creates micro black holes, they will evaporate instantly. And this the press has, yet again, conviently managed to forget to report.
