Because I like to sleep in on Sundays (and rarely have I posted on a Sunday),  I decided to share with all who pass this way a video......just one video every Sunday.  For some time friends and family have sent me videos via e-mail, some of which  you may have seen.  But there are other films....short films, amateur films....that are quite amazing and entertaining, yet few have seen.   These films I will be sharing.

SLEEPING IT OFF SUNDAY VIDEO

 

For some time now, people have been sending me some great videos (via e-mail) and I in turn have sent them on.  After giving it some thought, I have decided to share them here, with all who stop by, each Sunday.  That is, each Sunday, I will post up a new video.  And, because I like to sleep in on Sundays and because I rarely post on Sundays, I have decided to title this regular Sunday posting, "Sleep it Off Sunday Video."

This week I thought I might share one of my New Zealand postcards.   

 

I have only been to New Zealand once.....no, I take that back......I've been there twice.  Both times were spent entirely inside the Auckland Airport.  Auckland  was a two hour layover stop on my way to and from Australia (about 19 years ago).  Some day I hope to go back and visit New Zealand, but for now all I have is a hand full of postcards.  And yet, this postcard is not one that I purchased during my short stay in the Auckland Airport.  This postcard, along with an "End of Summer" tip-in, was sent to me in a handcrafted envelope less than two years ago.  I was hosting a tip-in swap, and one of my partners, who resides in Christchurch, New Zealand, sent this postcard with her tip-in. 

There is just something about this photo I find haunting.

The back of the postcard reads....

"Marsden Point, Northland, New Zealand"

"New Zealand's Oil Refinery has the capacity to supply 80% of this country's needs.  Situated at the head of Whangarei Harbour, the Point refines 2.5 million tons of crude oil per year, and from it produces 1,150,000 tonnes of petroleum, 490,000 tonnes of diesel, 520,000 tonnes of fuel oil, 100,000 tonnes of bitumen."

Tripler

 

Out on the island of Oahu, high atop Moanalua, a pink palace sits.

 

No, she is not another luxury resort hotel.

 

She is Tripler.....Tripler Army Medical Center and she is affectionately referred to as "The Pink Palace".  

 After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Lt. General Robert C. Richardson Jr., who was Military Governor of the Territory of Hawaii during World War II, commissioned the hospital to be built.  He hired the architectural firm of York & Sawyer to design the  medical complex, and a local landscape architect, Robert Thompson, to design the landscape.  Robert Thompson and York & Sawyer collaborated with one another to create a "place of solace" in which the hospitalized soldiers and sailors could recuperate emotionally as well as physically. 

It is no coincidence that this new medical complex on the island would be a coral pink.  At the time, The Royal Hawaiian was taken over by the U.S. Navy as a recreational facility for sailors.  It has been noted that General Richardson found the Royal Hawaiian a pleasantly restful  hotel and chose to incorporate the coral pink color, and other design elements as well, into the Tripler Medical Center.  And, it just so happens, Robert Thompson also designed the landscape of the Royal Hawaiian.

Beyond that coral pink facade and the perfectly manicured grounds, stands a premier tertiary medical center.   It is the largest and (only) tertiary care facility in the Pacific Basin with over 200 hospital beds.  Offering the best medical care, it supports roughly 400,000 active duty and retired military, their families and veterans.  It is a major teaching hospital that provides graduate education programs in medicine, psychiatry,  general surgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatrics, OB/GYN, radiology, pathology, urology, oral surgery, hospital administration, anesthesiology and nursing.

We're Eating In Tonight

Today is Thursday, and that means it time for

Tablescape Thursday. 

This week, I again have set the table for dinner.  My daughter Heather and her boyfriend Chris are joining us tonight.  The dishes I have chosen to use tonight are some of my everyday dishes.

 

 

The floral dinner plate is from a set that I bought some 11 or 15 years ago from Pier 1 Imports.   It is an inexpensive (blue floral) cream porcelain.  For my salad, I have topped a blue rimmed plate with a pressed glass plate.  I have had the blue rimmed  and the pressed glass dishes for over 27 years.  The blue rimmed service is, again, a very inexpensive service that I (believe) purchased from Venture (a Midwest discount department store that has long gone out of business).  For the flatware I chose the Reed & Barton and for the water glass I am using a bargain line crystal highball.

 

The lidded dragon dish is something I picked up from a shop out in Honolulu.  Although it isn't originally meant to hold a butter tub, that is what I use it for. 

 

On the opposite side of the table I have another lidded dish that I use for sugar.

 

The two porcelain eggs are salt and pepper shakers.

 

For the centerpiece, my Pussy Willow by Edward Marshall Boehm is braced by one of my large hurricanes and a small  blue vase.  This sweet blue vase was a wedding gift from my great grandfather to my great grandmother.  If you look close you will find it has been broken and charred.  Years later it fell from mantel into the fire; at which, my grandfather retrieved it's pieces with his bare hands and mended it for her.

Warm Double Chocolate Brownies with French Vanilla Ice Cream

The Pink Palace of the Pacific

 

The Royal Hawaiian

She is known by many as the "Pink Palace of the Pacific."  And she stands on 15 acres of prime beach frontage  of Waikiki.  

Seeking to increase tourism, this Spanish-Moorish style hotel, with  it's coral pink exterior, opened her doors, for the first time, February 1, 1927......only to close them again twenty years later after Pearl harbor was attacked.  At which time, The U.S. Navy took over the hotel and used it as a rest and recreation center for enlisted sailors.  After the war, the hotel was returned back to her owners and once again  her doors opened to tourists.

With the Royal Hawaiian, a new standard of vacationing was launched.  Luxury steamers brought the wealthiest and celebrities alike to the shores of Oahu.  The Royal Hawaiian attracted an elite group of visitors; the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin and Natalie Wood, just to name a few.

 

Last summer (2008), The Royal Hawaiian closed her doors for a major renovation to the tune of $85 million.  Although her official grand reopening wasn't till March 7, 2009, she hosted the Aloha Inaugural Ball on January 20th.  And according to Starwoods (who manages her) "The Royal Hawaiian will reclaim its rightful place as the icon of luxury and refinement in Hawai‘i for over 80 years."

It will be a while before I can try out one of their new rooms; my calender is pretty full for this summer.  But I can tell you from first hand experience, she is so worth the flight. 

 

She is a beautiful hotel

that must be experienced.

 

And, if you are lucky

 

and you should stay during a celebrated holiday,

 

you might be given

 

a special souvenir

such as a pink palace tin of cookies.

 

I now use my Royal Hawaiian tin to hold tea bags.

But try as I might, I could not find such a postcard.

I did however find this french postcard.

The girl in the photo looks as though she is giving it some thought......a great deal of thought.  Maybe too much thought.  Might she be in a trance?  She neither looks at him or the flowers; just a blank stare at nothing.  Or is it something.....or someone?  She does seam to be smiling.....just a tad.  Might she have spotted someone off in the distance, out of our view?  Might this other someone be another lover?  Or, maybe it's just a gas bubble.....

Today is Thursday, and that means it time for

Tablescape Thursday. 

This Thursday I decided to present my table which was set for dinner, last night, with our good friends from next door.  I decide to use my Duke of Gloucester from Royal Worcester, my Yamazaki gold plate flatware and my crystal water goblets. 

 

This is a copy of the original service created for William Henry, Duke of Gloucester. It was originally produced circa 1775.  His elder brother, King George III, visited the Worcester factory in 1788 granting the Royal Warrant the following year. The Gloucester service represents the first known Royal Service.  It is detailed in 22 carat gold eyelash gilding and turquoise boarder, displaying a fruit and insect motif.  All service is hand painted.

 

Since there were only the four of us, and I was too lazy to insert one of the extensions into the table, I kept the centerpiece simple.  I placed a ring of ivy around my ivory dove and set them under a glass cloche.

 

Instead of using napkin rings, I decided to use snuff bottles form my collection to set the napkins.

    

 

For dinner we had.....

Beef Flank Pinwheel Roll stuffed with Fresh Basil and Cheese

Fresh String Beans tossed with Butter

Warm Buttered Dinner Rolls

Coeur la Creme with Raspberry and Grand Marnier Sauce

Every Saturday, Beverly of How Sweet the Sound hosts an all things pink event.  I had contacted her a few weeks back about taking part, hoping to do so the following week.  Unfortunately I have been so very busy that I haven't had a chance to work on a "pink" post.  Last Thursday I received her e-mail to join in, but seeing as how I hadn't the time to post "pink", I didn't respond back. 

Well here I am today, going about my business, checking in on favorite blogs (one of which is Beverly's), checking in on what everyone else has posted "pink", and what do I spy but my name listed on Beverly's Pink Saturday list of pink bloggers.  :-) 

I am?   I am signed up to post a "pink" post?  Did I do this?  When?  Maybe in my sleep?  Could I have possibly left my bed in the middle of the night to post a respond e-mail to Beverly?  :-/  

No.....I think Beverly was just being the kind, generous, sweet, always thinking of others Beverly that we have all come to love.  I think Beverly was thinking.....That silly Robin; she forgot to send back her responce by Friday morning.  Well, I'll just add her on and pretend not to notice that she didn't follow the rules.   :-)
