Today marks the 50th birthday of our 50 star flag.
The five rows of six stars alternating with four rows of five stars was the design of Robert Heft, a (then) 17 year old teenager from Lancaster, Ohio.
What started as a simple school project, went on to become chosen (from more than 1,500 entries) by President Dwight Eisenhower as our new flag, after Hawaii was admitted into the union. It was on July 4th, 1960 that Robert Heft’s flag was ceremoniously adopted and hoisted high above the United States Capitol dome. Robert’s flag has since flown (under five administrations) over the White house, over every state capitol building, every U. S.military installation, schools, clubs, libraries, banks and homes. It is carried in parades, displayed during the Olympics and draped across the coffins of our fallen soldiers.
Robert Heft died last year, December 12, 2009. The original fifty star flag that Heft submitted for adoption back in 1959 sits in a safe in Saginaw, Michigan.
